We are delighted to work with many amazing racing employers across the country actively encourage apprenticeships in the racing industry, including Alex Dunn of Alex Dunn Racing in Somerset.

As an employer who is as passionate as us about supporting new talent in the racing industry, we caught up with Alex to discuss her experience as an employer and why she advocates apprenticeships in this diverse and fast-paced industry.

Q: Why do you choose to employ apprentices?

Alex “By employing apprentices, we are able to put something back into the industry and encourage young people to come into racing.”

Q: How does your yard benefit from employing an apprentice?

Alex: “We have had some fantastic apprentices over the years, and have found that our apprentices enjoy learning and being part of a close-knit team. Our apprentices have been dedicated and real assets to the yard!”

Q: How do you feel apprenticeships add value to an employee’s education, in comparison to following a more academic route?

Alex: “An academic route shouldn’t be thought of as the only option for young employee’s interested in education. Apprenticeships offer an excellent way for young people to learn about an industry by supplying a hands-on approach, and allow them to gain valuable experience and knowledge that benefits them in their future careers. Crucially, they are a paid employee whilst gaining their qualification, which they would not benefit from if they follow a solely academic route.”

Q: When training your employees, what is the most valuable lesson you think they can learn?

Alex: “Learning to work responsibly as part of a team, as well as an individual, is an important aspect of any industry, but especially racing.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about employing an apprentice?

Alex: “Employing apprentices has allowed us as a yard to encourage people into the industry and give back to the sport we all love.”

Q: What advice would you give to employers considering taking on an apprentice?

Alex: “I believe it’s something all employers should do if they are able to, it’s great to have people around them who want to learn and progress!”

Q: Why do you choose Haddon Training for your apprentice training?

Alex: “Haddon Training has been fantastic in their approach with our apprentices. Their level of care and attention to detail is second to none.”

Thanks Alex, we look forward to supporting many more apprentices with you in the future.
