Our BHS Stages qualifications are ideal for those who enjoy caring for and managing the welfare of horses.  You may aspire to manage an established equestrian business, or wish to advance your career in grooming, stable and business management.

Training for BHS assessments includes a mix of practical training and practice, workshops, events and revision or study at home with a BHS Approved Centre.

The assessment day focuses primarily on observation of the learner completing practical tasks, discussion of the tasks performed and discussion of related topics.

  • BHS Stage 2: Foundation Groom

    BHS Stage 2 provides an in-depth foundation knowledge and understanding of equine care and management, and the initial principles of teaching. This career certificate demonstrates the foundation skills to work in the industry as a groom with limited supervision.

    BHS Stage 1 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior.

    We deliver the care and lunge units.

     

    Essential Skills are a mandatory part of the apprenticeship programme in Wales.  In this apprenticeship maths, and English will therefore be included in the delivery of the programme; unless you have achieved the desired grade.

    For this apprenticeship Essential Skills are taken at Level 1.

    These are split into Communication (English), and Application of Number (maths).

    You would be prepared for all elements of the Essential Skills by your Trainer-Coach.

  • BHS Stage 3: Professional Groom

    BHS Stage 3 demonstrates an ability to work in the industry, taking higher responsibility for the day-to-day running of the yard and support and management of competition horses. This career certificate demonstrates the practical skills and knowledge to support the management of the yard.

    BHS Stage 2 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior.

    We deliver the care and lunge units.

  • BHS Stage 4: Yard Manager

    BHS Stage 4 celebrates the development of knowledge in horse care and management, covering business and breeding units.  This career certificate demonstrates the experience and skills required to independently train individuals and groups of riders, with sound practical business knowledge and the ability to take responsibility for an equestrian establishment or work as an effective freelance coach.

    BHS Stage 3 exam or recognised prior learning as specified by the British Horse Society must be completed prior.

    We deliver the care and lunge units.

     

    Essential Skills are a mandatory part of the apprenticeship programme in Wales.  In this apprenticeship maths, English and ICT will therefore be included in the delivery of the programme; unless you have achieved the desired grade.

    For this apprenticeship Essential Skills are taken at Level 2.

    These are split into Communication (English), Application of Number (maths) and Digital Literacy (ICT).

    You would be prepared for all elements of the Essential Skills by your Trainer-Coach.

  • What are the next steps in your career?

    The equine industry is vast. There will be scope to move up the ladder, or across the disciplines, and Haddon Training can support each individual apprentice’s goals. We have a variety of progression routes available for our apprentices and each assigned Trainer-Coach will be there to help their apprentice decide on the next step that is right for them.
