An apprenticeship in racing is not just about gaining a qualification, it is also about building a future, creating a path, and fulfilling dreams. This is an industry like no other; it offers those that work hard the chance of truly unique and brilliant opportunities; all of which are led by a passion for horses, racing and the community around it.

“I’ve been able to gain qualifications whilst still working for my employer, Christian Williams, and my apprenticeship runs really nicely alongside my racing career.”

Jack Tudor  – Welsh Grand National Winner 2019

“Haddon Training has been a massive help to me – with their help I was able to complete my apprenticeship whilst still working at Philip Hobbs Racing”.

Ben Jones – The Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly known as the Hennessy Gold Cup) Winner 2019

All current racing grooms under the age of 19 years old, must earn and complete the Racehorse Care – Level 2 apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.

To apply for a trainers licence completing the Racehorse Care and Management – Level 3 apprenticeship or equivalent, is an essential part of the criteria.

Our racing apprenticeships are approved and supported by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) as the national governing body and trade association for horseracing in the UK.

We also offer the recognised Certificate of Competence in the Welfare of Transporting Horses for short journeys as part of our racing apprenticeship programme.

The following sections will provide you with more information on the apprenticeships we run, entry requirements and possible next steps in your career.

To apply for a racing apprenticeship you will need to be of school leaver age and it is advantageous to have some prior working experience in the equine industry.

If you have already completed any of the following then the Racehorse Care & Management apprenticeship may be suited for you:

  • Level 2 in Horse Care through college
  • BHS Stage 2

If you are still in full-time education; school, college, university, on another apprenticeship, or just unsure of your suitability just contact our friendly team to discuss.

Essential Skills are a mandatory part of the apprenticeship programme in Wales.  Maths and English will therefore be included in the delivery of the programme; unless you have already achieved the desired grade.

For the Racehorse Care Level 2 apprenticeship Essential Skills are taken at Level 1.

For the Racehorse Care & Management Level 3 apprenticeship Essential Skills are taken at Level 2.

These are split into Communication (English) and Application of Number (maths) qualifications.

You would be fully prepared for both elements of the Essential Skills by your Trainer-Coach.

You will be regularly assessed in the workplace by your Trainer-Coaches, with testimonies from your Employer/Trainer. Case studies, pictures/videos and some written assignments/workbooks may also be used by your Trainer-Coach to check your knowledge and understanding.

The equine industry is vast. There will be scope to move up the ladder, or across the disciplines, and Haddon Training can support each individual apprentice’s goals.

We have a variety of progression routes available for our apprentices; this could include progressing onto our Racehorse Care and Management apprenticeship to further develop skills. Each assigned Trainer-Coach will be there to help their apprentice decide on the next step that is right for them
