An apprenticeship in racing is not just about gaining a qualification, it is also about building a future, creating a path, and fulfilling dreams. This is an industry like no other; it offers those that work hard the chance of truly unique and brilliant opportunities; all of which are led by a passion for horses, racing and the community around it.

We caught up with level 3 senior racehorse care apprentice, Daniel Ellis, to discuss his experience in the racing industry and his hopes for the future.

Dan says, “I joined Christian Williams Racing in South Wales in 2020 and completed my level 2 racehorse care qualification. I am currently studying my level 3 racehorse care and management qualification.

I started riding and trial hunting at an early age. I was a member of the Llangeinor Pony Club from the age of 5, which led me to Pony Racing. I enjoyed a number of years pony racing, winning 45 races, including the Charles Owen Racecourse Series 138cms Final at Newmarket Racecourse in 2017, riding Mr & Mrs Richard Prince’s pony “Clear The Track”. During my pony racing, I made lots of friends and enjoyed riding out for a number of different trainers. It was during my pony racing, that I decided my future lay in the horse racing industry.

When I joined Christian William’s yard, Jack Tudor (former apprentice, now jockey) was already undertaking an apprenticeship with Haddon Training, so it was an easy decision to join the level 2 qualification. I enjoy riding out as part of my training than stuck in a school classroom.

The best part of my apprenticeship is being able to learn new skills and putting them into practice on a daily basis. I am lucky to get to school horses over fences with the professional jockeys and continue to learn both in and out of the saddle.

My employer allows me time to go racing and has given me a number of rides in amateur races. He continually gives his advice on how I can improve my race riding skills. I have monthly visits from my Trainer Coach who checks on my progress.

It’s my ambition to become a Conditional jockey, but at the moment, I’m happy to be an amateur and continue learning in the Point to Point field.”
