Boasting true life experience in their areas of expertise, our industry expert Trainer Coaches offer valuable support and advice to our learners and employers with a detailed understanding of what it takes to achieve.
We welcome new racing Trainer Coach, Louisa Cookson, and discuss her experience in the industry.

Louisa says, “I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge and experience working in further education for 27 years. I have taught equine, veterinary nursing and animal welfare students at several colleges. I’m also a BHS stage 3 assistant groom and riding instructor and have taught at several riding schools, as well as competing in showjumping and cross-country trials.

I first became involved in apprenticeships in 2003 because I was inspired by combining work-based education with employment. In 2008 I introduced apprenticeships for racehorse care at North Shropshire College.

In 2018, I graduated with a BSc (hons) in Equine Therapies where I became particularly interested in laser therapy. I qualified as a laser therapist practitioner in 2021, which enabled me to treat animals with injuries, wounds and neurological conditions.

Some of my other career highlights include:

  • City & Guilds Assessment and Quality Assurance (AQA)
  • Involved in the set-up of 14-16 School Diploma in environmental land-based studies
  • Racehorse care teacher at the National Racing College
  • Foundation degree in equine business enterprise
  • Lecturer of equine and animal care at North Shropshire College
  • Part of the trailblazer group for veterinary nursing apprenticeships at Warwickshire College
  • developing a new racehorse care course with 1st4sport

I have also featured on Channel 4’s ‘The Supervet’ and ITV’s ‘Doc Martin’.

I joined Haddon Training in 2022 as a Trainer Coach to support the next generation in the racing industry. I can pass on first-hand knowledge and expertise to apprentices, which will help develop the future of the sport. It’s fulfilling to see apprentices challenge themselves and achieve more than what they thought possible.”
