Having recently welcomed equine Trainer Coach, Debbie Carpenter, to our growing team of experienced industry expert Trainer Coaches, we caught up with her to discuss her 15+ years’ experience, her career highlights and the importance of apprenticeships within the equine industry.

Debbie says, “Originally studying at Hartpury College, I achieved my National Diploma in Equine Studies and BHS Stage 2. I then became an eventing groom for 15 years. I was fortunate to have been part of Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and have groomed at major young, senior and 5* rider events. I also have some experience in dressage and showjumping.

As a Trainer Coach I will support and encourage people to join this exciting industry. I enjoy encouraging learners and helping them understand the foundations of horse care so they can further develop their skills. Working with horses is such a rewarding career and comes with an abundance of opportunities to travel both nationally and internationally.

There is currently a shortage of equine grooms in the industry, but apprenticeships provide a bridge between employment and gaining a qualification. Apprentices can work and gain on the job experience, which is a huge benefit to both employers and learners.

My advice to prospective learners would be ‘it’s tough, but the rewards are great!’.

Outside of work, I enjoy walking and running. I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2022 which was a huge achievement, and I can also play the Ukulele. If I had a superpower, I would be able to fly so I could see more of the world.”
