Turning a Passion into a Profession!

We recently caught up with Racing Groom Apprentice, Jess French, to discuss her apprenticeship and the positive impact it has had on her personal development and learning.

Jess’ Apprenticeship Experience

Jess’ path into the racing industry began with her love of caring for horses, and more specifically her interest in caring for horses at the races. During her time at college, Jess completed her Level 2 Senior Equine Groom Racing Standard qualification.

Jess says, “I was motivated to pursue a racing apprenticeship because you are given the opportunity to learn on the job. The workload was also conveniently split into sections, which I found made the learning process easier.”

Jess currently works for Harry Fry Racing and is in the process of completing her Level 3 Senior Equine Groom Racing Standard.

Harry Fry is a British Racehorse Trainer specialising in National Hunt racing (also known as jumps racing). He became one of the youngest trainers in the country when he launched his career in October 2012.

“My employer, Harry Fry, have been incredibly supportive throughout my apprenticeship, enabling me to improve my existing skills as well teaching me many new ones.

I’ve really enjoyed my course due to the diversity of work involved, and I can complete this work in a range of different ways. For example, we learn through interactive methods such as watching videos and demonstrations, and when this is combined with some written coursework it keeps the course fun and engaging.”

Encouragement and Support Throughout

When it comes to guiding and supporting our learners, we know the importance of having experienced staff on hand to offer valuable support and advice. Jess reflects on the support she’s received from her Haddon Training Trainer Coach Laura Horsley,

“My Trainer Coach Laura is incredibly helpful, and she always ensures that she is available when I need help. If I feel unsure about something, she is extremely supportive and encouraging.”

Career Aspirations

“My long-term career goal is to become a Head Travelling Person. The skills and responsibilities I’ve gained during my apprenticeship at Harry Fry’s have only reinforced my aspirations to achieve this future role.”
