NRW: Meet Our Racing Trainer Coach, Macey

As part of our celebration of National Racehorse Week, we’d like to introduce Macey, who has recently joined the Haddon Training team as a Racing Trainer Coach. Macey’s journey into the equine world began with a lifelong passion for horses, a love that has shaped her career from an early age. Read more about her story below.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

My name is Macey, I have always loved horses and have been riding as long as I can remember. After leaving school, I began my career in the equine industry, starting at a riding school where I loved teaching young children how to ride. I then moved away to work at a dressage stud yard, where I had the incredible opportunity to ride many talented horses and gain valuable insight into the breeding side of the industry. When moving back home I started working in racing and absolutely fell in love with it and have worked in racing ever since. I have especially enjoyed bringing my dressage skills into the racing to strengthen and develop the horses I ride. In my own time I enjoy retraining my ex-racer who will hopefully compete in the ROR series next year.

What motivated you to pursue a career in this industry?

When I started at my first racing yard, it was meant to be a ‘gap filler’ before I went to university. However, I fell in love with it so much that I decided to stay and never ended up going to university. There’s so much I love about racing – the thrill of riding up the gallops, the joy of watching a horse you ride progress, the excitement of going to the races, and the incredible level of care the horses receive. I decided that if a job could be this much fun, then why would I do anything else?

What drew you to pursue your role as a Trainer Coach at Haddon Training?

After deciding not to go to university, I completed a Level 3 Senior Racing Groom Apprenticeship through Haddon. I remember asking my Trainer Coach at the time what it would take to work for Haddon, as I wanted to share my passion for racing with others and help them succeed, just as my Trainer Coach had done for me.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

The thing I am looking forward to the most is being able to have an active role in the industry and helping and watching others progress. I also really enjoy visiting the different yards, seeing how each environment is individual and different and meeting a variety of people.
