It’s National Apprenticeship Week! Today’s theme is Skills for Life, and Daisy May’s journey is a perfect example of how apprenticeships equip individuals with lifelong skills and career opportunities. As a Level 2 Animal Care and Welfare Assistant apprentice at St Giles Animal Centre, Daisy May shares her experience of gaining invaluable hands-on training through Haddon Training. Her apprenticeship has helped her build confidence, develop expertise in animal welfare, and take important steps toward a fulfilling career. Her story is a testament to perseverance, learning, and the opportunities that come with following your passion.
What inspired you to want to work with animals / in the animal care industry?
I have always loved animals since I was a child, but due to travelling and working abroad I never was able to start a career in the field until now. From a young age I have always been around dogs, cats and horses because of my parents, which I think kickstarted my love for them. Working in this industry allows me to develop my skills in handling and helping a variety of animals—what could be more rewarding than that?
What is an accomplishment you are proudest of so far?
I’m proud of the fact that, at 27, I’ve taken the leap to pursue my passion by starting a Level 2 apprenticeship. This journey has shown me that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. To get here, I reached out to numerous animal rescues, facing many rejections due to a lack of experience. Instead of giving up, I took the initiative to volunteer at a smallholding, gaining the hands-on experience I needed to create an opportunity like this for myself.
How has your experience been at St Giles Animal Centre?
Working at St Giles has been an incredible opportunity to expand my education and skill set in animal welfare. I have loved every part of it even the more routine jobs, everyday is different at St Giles and I love being a part of something that is changing the lives for so many animals and even people.
What is your favourite thing about doing an apprenticeship with Haddon Training so far?
I really enjoy my modules with Haddon training and how much they are enhancing my knowledge and confidence when in the workplace. My Trainer Coach is incredibly supportive and always encouraging, no matter what questions I have. Plus, getting to learn while working alongside the dogs is an amazing experience!
What are your aspirations for the future?
I’m not 100% sure what my future brings, however I know I will be working in the animal industry in some way and with more responsibility thanks to Haddon Training.
