Our Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AESE) programme is a further education option that helps young showjumping, eventing, dressage and para dressage athletes reach their full potential. AESE is run in proud partnership with British Showjumping and British Eventing and is recognised as part of British Equestrian’s Performance Pathway.
We recently spoke to showjumper, Juliette, who took part in our Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AESE) programme. Juliette talks about the valuable connections she’s made on the course and the insights gained from the specialist coaches, which have shaped her approach to a future in the showjumping field.
What inspired you to apply and take part in AESE?
I had heard positive feedback from several people who had previously completed the course. As someone looking to advance with horses and potentially build a career in the field, this course stood out for offering the perfect combination of both on-horse and off-horse training.
Can you describe a specific moment or experience during the AESE programme that has helped your development?
Definitely the fitness session we did during the first camp. It made me realise the importance of maintaining my own fitness alongside the horses.
Which aspect of the programme have you enjoyed the most?
Connecting with other athletes on the course who share the same goals. It’s been incredibly motivating, as we’ve supported each other along the way. It’s also been nice to run into the other athletes on the course at shows and events.
How did you find the learning experience and the specialist coaches that were involved?
The coaches have helped me see the bigger picture, encouraging me to focus not just on the performance while on the horse, but also on the important groundwork and preparation that needs to happen in the background.
