Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your history in the industry and your business?
I’m Fiona, I started my livery business in 1988 after having worked for a few International riders.
When did you first start hiring apprentices, and what motivated you to take this step?
I began hiring apprentices in the early nineties, after one of my students, whom I was helping to produce her horse, approached me about the opportunity to train full-time as an apprentice.
What benefits have you seen in your business from having apprentices on your team?
It has been incredibly satisfying to watch young people grow in both knowledge and confidence. As a parent of four grown children, I truly enjoy the energy and fresh perspectives that young people bring to the table.
What advice would you give to an employer who is thinking about hiring an apprentice?
I would encourage anyone thinking about taking on an apprentice, as the benefits are substantial on many levels. While it requires effort from both sides, my experience has been nothing but positive.
