Business Administrator within Racing: Eric’s Story

Meet Eric, who is currently completing his Level 3 Business Administrator within Racing apprenticeship at Arena Racing Company (ARC), Lingfield Park Resort in Surrey. This qualification is delivered exclusively by Haddon Training in partnership with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).

The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation (SLDF) played a key role in placing Eric with Arena Racing Company and supporting him in enrolling on the apprenticeship. Eric talks to us about his role, his ambitions for the future, and why he’s passionate about inspiring others to explore apprenticeships as a valuable pathway to career advancement.

What inspired you to pursue the Level 3 Business Administration Qualification?

I have always had a deep interest in all aspects of business and management, but my true passion lies in administration. Over time, I’ve found that I enjoy the organisational and behind-the-scenes work, such as coordinating memberships and keeping things running smoothly. My journey so far at Arena Racing Company has been supported by wonderful mentors, and I aspire to grow within the industry.

Can you tell us a bit more about your role at Arena Racing Company?

A major aspect of my role involves managing annual memberships, which has given me a first-hand understanding of the importance of consistency and communication in a business setting. Ensuring that memberships are renewed, and that each customer receives the service they expect, has shown me how small, diligent tasks contributes to a well-run operation. This aspect of administration has become one of my favourite parts of my work.

How has your apprenticeship experience been with Haddon Training?

One of the most influential figures in my career development has been Haddon Training. Their support and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my professional mindset. My Trainer Coach, Darren, has been a tremendous support and has provided guidance throughout my apprenticeship. His mentorship has been invaluable to me.

What are your aspirations for the future?

Looking ahead, my ambition is to rise to the level of a CEO or manager. I want to lead organisations with a focus on building strong foundations for sustainable growth. I also feel a strong calling to inspire other young people to follow a similar path. I believe apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain practical experience and develop the necessary skills for a successful career in business within the racing industry. By sharing my story, I hope to motivate others to consider apprenticeships as a valuable route to their dream careers.
