Apprentice and employer perspective
In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, equine Trainer Coach, Leanne Brown, caught up with event rider Tom Bird, based at Regal Equestrian in Warwickshire, and his apprentice Will Harrison-Jones, to discuss the impact apprenticeships have had for them.

Tom says, “Employing apprentices gives passionate people the opportunity to join the equine industry. Our apprentice, Will, shows enthusiasm for his role. He brings a level of energy and positivity which is great to have around the yard and clients like to see that too.

When hiring an apprentice, I’d look for someone who is hard working, willing to learn and trustworthy. I enjoy seeing them develop and grow into a valued member of the team.

The qualifications with Haddon Training are well structured, provide ample theory to promote knowledge, as well as suiting someone who learns in a practical way. The structure is clear, and everyone is involved in the process, including myself, Will and his Trainer Coach. We are kept informed of completion dates and targets.”

Will Harrison Jones began his level 2 equine groom apprenticeship in 2022.

Will added, “Horses have always been a passion of mine and from a young age I knew I wanted to work with them. I chose an apprenticeship as it allows me to work with horses, interact with people, and be paid whilst learning. I found it to be more hands on and practical than traditional routes.

This is a career route that most people my age aren’t aware of. I get to work with fit event horses, travel to competitions and this year Tom is giving me the opportunity to travel abroad to competitions with him. Tom’s always on the yard to support me and offer guidance. My Trainer Coach, Leanne, is helpful, positive, easy to talk to and supportive.

In the future, I hope to become an international groom. I enjoy working with Tom and I’m looking forward to being part of an international team.”
