This Higher Level 4 Apprenticeship is aimed at Yard Managers whose role it is to ensure the yard runs efficiently. A Yard Manager’s responsibility would be the day to day running of the yard including managing staff, care of the horses, all aspects of health and safety and dealing with clients and owners.

The qualification is the EQL Level 4 Certificate in Horse Care and Management (practical) and The Principles of Horse Care and Management (theory). The apprentice would be supported by our highly experienced Trainer-Coaches in the workplace, eliminating the need to go off-site for training.

  • The role of a level 4 apprentice includes

    The role is wide-ranging and covers

    • General day to day management of an equine yard
    • Caring for a range of horses, maintaining their welfare
    • Supervising more junior staff members
    • Managing the business administration
    • Maintaining equine yard records
    • Liaising with clients – liveries, riding school clients etc
    • Yard and grassland management


    All apprentices will be entering professional employment in this popular industry; receiving a contract of employment and being paid in line with the Apprentice National Minimum Wage. Working in the equine industry requires dedication and commitment, as well as, learning and adhering to safe working practices, being flexible and prepared to work in all weather conditions.

  • Entry requirements

    The equine industry wants the entry requirements for this apprenticeship to be flexible, but ensure that some prior knowledge has already been attained in this field.

    The recommendation is that one of the following should be completed prior to beginning this apprenticeship:

    • Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Horse Care and Management/Racehorse Care and Management Level 3/Extended Diploma in Horse Care and Management.
    • Level 3 Certificate in Horse Care/Level 3 Certificate in Riding Horses on the Flat.
    • Level 3 Award in the Principles of Horse Care.
    • At least three years of industry experience.

    To apply for this apprenticeship you will also need to be of school leaver age and no longer in full-time education (including School, College, University or on another Apprenticeship). There is no upper age limit, however, if you are aged above 20 years old you must have been within your current role no longer than 12 months.

  • Teaching, learning, assessment

    You will be regularly assessed in the workplace by your Trainer Coach, with testimonies from your Employer/Trainer. Case studies, pictures/videos and some written assignments/workbooks may also be used by your Trainer-Coach to check your knowledge and understanding.

    The equine industry is vast. There will be scope to move up the ladder, or across the disciplines, and Haddon Training can support each individual apprentice’s goals. We have a variety of progression routes available for our apprentices and each assigned Trainer-Coach will be there to help their apprentice decide on the next step that is right for them.
