The NEW Dog Groomer Level 2 Apprenticeship is here!

By Kirsten Clements – Dog Grooming & Animal Care Specialist

Dog grooming is the process of grooming a dog into a preferred style, which is discussed with the customer and client whilst also considering the welfare of the dog. Dog grooming has become more popular within the last fifteen to twenty years, with a higher demand for dog groomers throughout the UK. Dogs can be groomed into a range of styles in accordance with breed standard, “teddy bear cut” and “puppy cut” to name a few.

We were privileged to work alongside the apprenticeship institute in developing their exciting new Level 2 Dog Groomer apprenticeship. You must be employed within a dog grooming establishment, for example a salon, retail establishment or veterinary practice. There must be a suitable qualified individual onsite to train you with the necessary skills which you will be assessed on during your apprenticeship and as part of your final examination.

This apprenticeship aims to provide dog grooming stylists, assistant dog groomers, dog groomers, dog grooming technicians and assistant stylists with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to become a qualified dog groomer. During the apprenticeship you will learn about:

  • The importance of legal requirements you have as a dog groomer
  • Canine anatomy and physiology
  • Canine manipulation techniques
  • Bathing routine
  • Drying techniques
  • Coat trimming techniques
  • Canine first aid
  • Customer service

You will develop your skills to conduct a grooming plan with a customer. This will include selecting a suitable bathing, drying and coat trimming technique for your customer’s canine companion! You will also develop your skills to handle and move dogs using suitable techniques. As a dog grooming apprentice, you are expected to always take ownership of your work, show respect and empathy towards dogs, always work safely, work as part of a team to meet daily work goals, show respect to others and have a commitment to your own learning and development.
